Parish Ministries
Sunday School

For a faith based community, an education program is very important in the formation of their future generations. In our heritage and culture, the Sunday School (CCD) program is established to help our community to hand over the faith that we received from our forefathers to the next generation. Accordingly, the Syro-Malabar Mission on Staten Island conducts the religious education program for our children with the intention to help the young families in our community in their efforts to bring up the future generations as good citizens to their fellow beings as well as to the kingdom of God.

The ways and means through which the program carries out its mission are: faith training in class rooms, coordinating cultural activities, promoting role models, conducting seminars and group activities, facilitating talent competitions, coordinating picnic trips, etc.

The Sunday School Program is one of the major initiatives of our Parish, and it has continued to make good progress over the years. Please click on the links on the right side for the  Sunday School's annual reports.

Liturgical Choir

It is very important for a Church community to have a liturgical choir of its own. The Mission is proud to say that we have a well established Liturgical Choir that helps the congregation to take part Eucharistic Celebrations and other prayer occasions more effective and fruitful. It is very lively and fulfilling when we attend the Holy Mass together with our children’s voices heard all over church. It is really a challenge for the children who are born and brought up mostly in America present such a choir in Malayalam and make the Liturgical celebrations very lively and beautiful. It gives great assurance that there would be a Eucharistic Community here on Staten Island tomorrow.

Sacristan

The ministry of sacristan ensures that the sanctuary is prepared, and all the liturgical articles are ready for the Eucharistic celebration of the parish community. The sacristan maintains the sacristy where the liturgical vestments, books, and other sacramental items are kept.

Lectors

There are various ministries that enhance the Liturgical participation very enjoyable. One of such ministry is the Ministry of Lectors. They read the Word of God for the congregation during the Holy Mass.

Malayalam Class

Malayalam Class for our youngsters is conducted on every Sunday. This initiative helps our young generation to have an effective communication with their parents and grandparents, and to take active participation in our Sunday liturgical celebration.

Parish Bulletin

Our monthly Parish Bulletin serves the Mission as the media to connect our members more effectively. The timely messages of Pastor, information on different activities of the Mission, Lector assignments for the Sunday Mass, birthdays, anniversaries, death notices, and teachings of the Church are passed on to the community through the Bulletins.

SMCC

Syro-Malabar Catholic Congress (SMCC) is an association of lay people that works under the direction of the St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Diocese of Chicago. The Chapter that formed recently in Staten Island Mission contribute tremendous support for the community formation with its various faith related activities. The regional family conference of 2010 will be hosted by this Chapter here on Staten Island.

Women's Forum

The role of women in a family is very significant. This is same within a church community. The newly formed Women’s Forum will bring more dynamism and enthusiasm for this faith community’s future spiritual developments.

Jesus Youth

Jesus Youth is an international Catholic youth movement based in charismatic spirituality. It had taken its roots in Kerala (India), and now actively spread in many other countries throughout the world making difference in the faith life of youth.

Jesus Youth is an initiative of young people themselves, who, filled with the Holy Spirit try to reach out to other young people. The strength of the movement is its special focus on a life centred on Lord Jesus Christ. It begins with an experience of God, nourished by prayer, the Word of God, the sacraments and fellowship, and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with others.

Speech Club

The Syro-Malabar Speech Club is an attractive part of this Mission. It provides mutual support and positive learning suggestions for the youngsters to improve their public speaking talents and listening skills in an environment of mutual respect and care. This will help the children to boost their self esteem and confidence in their personality traits.
